Hi. I’m Gareth Naylor. I was born in England but have lived in Japan for about 17 years.
I have always been interested in art but it was only when I came to Japan in 1999 that I became serious about being an artist.
In Japan, I started painting outdoors. And for quite a few years now I have been travelling around Oita, a beautiful, backwater prefecture of Japan, by bicycle or by car painting whatever attracts my eye.
Watercolor is the best medium for painting outdoors. It is light, easy to set up and produces results quickly so that you are able to catch fleeting moments.
But I also find watercolor is a very beautiful and exciting medium to use.
I now paint everyday, it is a way of life for me and I love it.
If I had to say what the deep motivation behind by work is then I would say the great outdoors. The landscape whether urban or rural. This is what inspires me.
A sunset seen even in the rear-view window of my car can suddenly move my heart. And it is this reaction that I try to put into my paintings. It is my hope that these paintings will also move your heart.
It is my hope that I can show you the joys of watercolor painting and in the most relaxing and enjoyable way.
Nearly all my paintings are for sale. Let me know if you are interested by contacting me here.
Happy Painting!
Gareth.
