Painting my local river during a hot summer in Japan

This was originally written on the 6th August 2020. And I left it as a draft.

There was also no painting with this article and I couldn’t find the one I was writing about

so I just added some paintings of Oita river that I did in 2020.

Here is what I wrote.

It is now summer time in Japan and it is killing me.

And yet every morning I get up and walk by the river.

And I even do some jogging.

It’s hard to do but wonderful when you get that second wind.

The sweat comes off me in rivulets.

Although my head is full of nonsense thoughts I still though manage to appreciate the scenery.

True, it is not your typical picturesque scene.

So I have to really try to look for those beautiful aspects.

And recently I found one and did this painting.

What I love about this painting is the intensity.

The sky is just a bright white haze.

And the distant river bank is a soft blue.

The river sparkles with the intense light.

And on the near side you have intense colors and greenery.

It’s so powerful.

I just hope that I am able to convey the beauty of it.

Below are some other paintings I did of Oita river in 2020.

Gareth Naylor

I am an Englishman living and painting in Japan. I have now been here for over 17 years and have been painting for all that time. I love to travel around the Japanese countryside and find beautiful places to paint.
