Watercolor paintings of countryside scenes in Japan

I’ve traveled many times into the Japanese countryside looking for scenes to paint and for many years was met with disappointment. Only after much searching and a lot of failed paintings did I find beautiful scenes and moments to paint. I love to be out in the Japanese countryside. There is just a feeling of being a stranger in a mysterious land full of history and beauty.

Brief Anecdotes

In the future I will do some paintings of Ogata, Kamae, Usa and Taketa which are all in Oita prefecture.

Yufudake Mountain

I once got stuck on this mountain all night. It is quite a harrowing story and at some point they’ll be a link here to that story.

Shonai

A few years ago I tried to travel to Yufuin a “fairly” picturesque tourist town. But nearly every time I stopped about half-way in a place called Shonai because I saw some beautiful scene.

Yufuin

I have been to this tourist town many times. If you look around you can find some really beautiful scenes. Here are a few I found and painted.

Kuju

This is a beautiful national park. It’s a little far so I can’t often go there but I love this place very much.

Kunisaki

This is a beautiful and mysterious place that I love to visit. It has many outstanding beaches.

Inukai

I have very fond memories of this place. My wife would take my 5 year old daughter here to meet a lady who taught her all about country life. We did a lot of things. My daughter also got the chance to feed chickens and play with the country lady’s dog. She had a lovely time. At some point I’ll add a link to one of those memorable visits. Anyone, on one occasion I saw a farmer next to his fire and that became a painting.
