I live next to a river in Japan called Oita river. I’ve spent hours and hours trying to paint this river. And nearly all my attempts I have thrown away because they were so bad. But eventually I made some good paintings. And I’ve also painted some other Japanese rivers, such as the one in Kitsuki which I painted in 2018 – you can see it below. The interesting thing about Japanese rivers, at least for an Englishman such as myself, is that they are very shallow and stony. And in city areas they often have an artificial embankment on either side, such as Oita river. For a long time I’ve hated this artificial embankment because I think it is so ugly. I have tried though to paint scenes of this river which are beautiful – I hope I’ve succeeded at that.
